The babies have arrived!

The Bluebird babies, that is… The first brood of the season have hatched and are keeping Mama and Papa Bluebird busy. I’ll be experimenting with my remote camera and posting the more interesting photos as I (and they) progress…

Meanwhile, here is Mama just arriving to duck in and feed the little ones

Update to Heating System at the Little House in the Village

I’ve updated the heating system at the Little House in the Village.  The previous setup cycled too quickly due to the high heat output from the boiler and the low heat consumption of our small house’s radiators.  The boiler needs the high heat output to be able to create hot water on demand and, while the boiler is capable of modulating its heat output over a 5 to 1 range, it wasn’t able to go low enough to heat the house efficiently when there were moderate temperatures outside.

With this new setup, I’ve added a buffer tank in the crawlspace to provide some thermal mass to store heat during heating cycles.  In theory, this should allow the boiler to burn for a longer time and then stay off for a very long time – much more efficient this way.  Unfortunately, as I’ve cited before, “In theory, there is no difference between practice and theory.  In practice, there is.”[1] In this case, the boiler does burn efficiently to get the tank up to temperature, but then reverts to short burns to keep it warm.  Some tweaks are definitely needed…

In any case, here is the current setup.  I really didn’t want any equipment in the crawlspace, but, being a passive tank, the problems should be few – “In theory…”

Finally! A place to put my Shop Towels!

:-)  I finally have the Finishing Room cabinets in place, complete with the functioning sink!   This will be a much better place to prepare finishes and clean up afterward than my dinky half bath!

There are obviously a few more items to complete, but this, at least, is fully functioning!

More later…

Finishing Room Cabinets and Sink

Progress on Workshop Finishing Room

Progress is being made on the Workshop Finishing Room.  Yesterday, Kerry made the Spray curtains which will cover the walls and workshop entry door whenever I’m spraying finish on a project.  I had recently installed the double door between the Workshop and the Finishing Room and added the exhaust and return filters.  These filters will be used to clear the air of dust prior to spraying and also remove any airborne particulates while spraying.

I also completed the Spray table which will give me a solid turntable on which I can place the workpiece being sprayed.  The Table uses a left over mobile heavy equipment base and will hold a couple hundred pounds, if necessary (after adding some sand bags to the base).

Next on the list are the cabinets and sink to serve as mixing and cleaning station.

Have a look!

This view shows the door separating the Workshop from the Finishing Room. The door is an exterior grade door to maintain reasonable air-tight condition between the two rooms. Note the return filter above the door and the exhaust filter in the corner.

This shows the corner set up for normal day to day use. Note the spray table in the foreground. The wooden top leaning on against the wall can be attached to the turntable to handle larger pieces.

This is how the corner will be set up for spraying. The curtains cover both walls and the door, exposing only the exhaust and return filters. There will also be a drop cloth placed on the floor while spraying.

Note the blast gate and ducting coming from the wall to the Exhaust Filter box. This is attached to my Dust Collection system and will keep the room well filtered. Also note the coiled hose on the floor - this is attached, through the wall, to my HVLP Turbine, mainly to keep the noise from it, along with the Dust Collection system, on the far side of the wall. It also reduces the amount of particulate circulating into the turbine filters.
